Box Tag
Box Tag is a fun game that naturally brings out edgework, and deceptive skills from the players as they try to evade being tagged.
Setup
- Create a space that the players must stay in, this can be a face-off circle, or a box (as shown in the video)
- On the whistle, one player works to tag the players inside the space. The last remaining player wins.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to use deception, weight shifts, and tight turns to evade being tagged.
Variations
- Can set this up in different areas of the ice.
- Can make the space larger so players can get up to faster speeds.
- Can have more than one person tagging.
Pad Race
Simple race around the pads or figure 8 pattern. Turn into a relay race.
Place the pads at the right distance for the level of player, spread out as needed.
Each line does the same route, pictured on the plan is a variation for a visual.
Add pucks if desired.
Coaches Chaos Stops
Players skate around small area and need to stop when coach is close to "cutting" the player off.
Like a tag game but instead players stop (with two feet). Can emphasize stopping one direction to start then switch sides after a minute of skating.
Coaches can add "hands up" motion to produce stop from player, helpful so the player knows that the coach is in the player's way.
Player has to stop, no turns.
For the more experience skaters feel free to add pucks.
2v2 or 3v3 Nets Back to Back (Mites)
As it sounds, coach with spot a puck on the boards or pass to a team that is scored on.
Play to 3 goals or for a short time period.
Drill can be setup anywhere on the rink.
