Please Note: The Practice of the Week is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this to build ideas to develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team's age and skill levels. IHS should always be used as a starting point and you can add/remove constraints to fit your team.
ALSO NOTE: This is too many drills for one practice. Take the ones you like and adjust for your team and time constraints.
Practice Theme: The drills and games in this practice are designed to help your players work on 1 on 1's in various situations.
3 Key Focus Points
Offense:
- Head up - see where the open ice is and what the defenders position is
- Protect the puck - use your body and low center of gravity to keep the defender from the puck
- Use deception - use false information from your eyes, head, body, and feet to create space & separation from the defender
Defense:
- Eyes - keep your eyes focused on the players chest, not the puck.
- Stick on the ice - use short stabs and not a sweeping motion to achieve stick on puck.
- Positioning - utilize good angles & gaps.

Coaching Clips
McDavid & Pastrnak Inside/Outside with Change of Pace
These are two great clips for 1 v 1 rushes that utilize the inside to outside move with changing pace. We breakdown two goals from 2 of the best players in the world, one from Connor McDavid and another from David Pastrňák.
What to Watch
- Change of Speed - changing your skating pace can lull the defenseman to sleep while they slow down to your speed.
- Use Deception - as you slow down, use deception to make the defenseman bite and think you are going to the inside of the ice. You can use a single shift deke, or body language such as your eyes, head, shoulders, etc. to make them think you are going to the inside of the ice.
- Accelerate To The Outside - once the defenseman slows down and bites to the inside, that is when you turn on the gas and explode to the outside!
Draisaitl Changes Angle and Uses Attack Position
In this clip Draisaitl attacks on his off side (lefty attacking on the right side of the ice).
What to Watch
- he puts the puck into attack position where it is away from the defenders stick and he can shoot.
- he pulls the puck towards his body to change the angle of his release.
- The shot placement is also perfect, placed just over the height of the goalie's pad just as the goalie makes a slight lateral move to adjust to Draisaitl changing the angle.
Dahlin Entry D - Pivot Stick On Puck
This clip shows a great gap, posture and stick detail here by Rasmus Dahlin to deny a clean zone entry.
What to Watch
- Dahlin has a good gap and defensive posture
- His stick is on the ice
- He does an open pivot with no crossover & stick connected to the ice
- He turns, closes & finishes stick on puck to create a turnover leading to transition & goal
