Objective

To develop players' quick decision-making, deception, and puck movement in a small area with a numerical advantage. This small ice game emphasizes creating and exploiting scoring opportunities through fast-paced play.

Setup

• Place two nets at opposite sides of a face-off circle.
• Divide the circle in half with an imaginary line.
• One offensive player from each team (blue and white) starts on their side of the circle, while two teammates from each team position themselves outside the circle near their goal.
• The coach is positioned nearby with a large supply of pucks.

Execution

1. The coach drops a puck into the middle of the circle for a 50/50 battle between the two players inside the circle.
2. Players must stay on their assigned half of the circle, using their stick to defend and intercept passes but not crossing into the opponent's zone.
3. The team that wins possession forms a 3-on-1 attack with the two outside teammates against the lone defender in the circle.
4. The attacking players focus on quick puck movement and deception to create scoring opportunities:
   • Use fake shots or deceptive passes to manipulate the defender and goaltender.
   • Aim to create open shooting lanes or set up a one-timer.
5. If the puck goes out of play or a shot is missed, the coach immediately sends a new puck to one of the players, continuing the drill.
6. Offense switches to defense when the opposing team gains possession, ensuring continuous play and frequent puck battles.
7. The two outside players must make quick, realistic plays, moving the puck within one second. If they hold the puck too long, the coach blows the whistle, signaling a turnover, and restarts the drill for the opposing team.
8. Each shift lasts approximately 30 seconds, with 8–10 puck scenarios per shift.

Coaching Points

• Offensive Players:

  • Focus on quick puck movement and deception.
  • Use body language and stick movement to create false information for the defender and goalie.
  • Take advantage of one-touches and quick passes to exploit the 3-on-1 advantage.

• Defensive Players:

  • Stay disciplined in your zone and focus on intercepting passes.
  • Use active sticks to block passing lanes and limit scoring opportunities.

• Outside Players:

  • Make realistic plays quickly, within one second of receiving the puck.
  • Avoid holding the puck for too long or waiting for the perfect opportunity.

• Game Awareness:

  • Encourage creativity and adaptability to manipulate the defender and goalie.
  • Practice decision-making under pressure in a small area to simulate game situations.
