For young players we do not have to emphasize "carving a C" quite so much when teaching them how to skate backwards. Instead we can work using both feet at the same time. Talk to them about pushing both toes out and bring the heels back in. You may have heard this referred to as "backwards full lemons" or "skulling". Just get them comfortable "carving the C's" with both feet and as they get more comfortable you can progress to one foot at a time. Here are some additional tips on how to skate backwards.
