2013 Practice 6
2013 Practice 6

Full ice warmup with heads up 4 goalies or nets

All 4 lines go at once, pass each other with heads up, figure 8's transitions etc through each cone.
1v1
Have both left side lines go with pucks for a figure 8, opposite lines on right side of rink do a transition figure 8 without pucks then become back checkers (switch lines/sides)
6 cone Full ice warmup

3 cone pass warmup. Add 1 cone after figure 8s. This drill can be done with 2 or 4 lines, 2 or 4 nets.
If 2 lines, move pass receiving line to middle hashes, add 2-3 cones for additional puck handling.
Purple Eagle Angle Drill

The Purple Eagle Angle Drill from TJ Manastersky, Head Coach of Brock University allows players to practice offensive puck protection and defensive angling concepts.
Setup
- Line up players by all 4 neutral zone face-off dots.
- On the whistle, alternating lines from opposite sides of the ice pass the puck to the player directly across from them.
- The puck carrier jumps up ice as soon as they get the puck while the player who passed them the puck works on angling them to the outside of the ice.
- The puck carrier then practices "cutting the defenders hands," works to get inside ice after they get into the blue line, and take a shot on net.
- Alternate sides so everyone gets chances to play on offense and defense.
Coaching Points
- Defender - keep stick on the ice and angle the puck carrier to the outside of the ice.
- Puck carrier - keep head up and work to cut the defenders hands to take away their strength to poke check and take the puck away from you. Practice shooting in stride or changing the shot angle on your shot.
Variations
- Can have defenders use token pressure (as shown in the video), or allow this to be a full 1 on 1.

RPI 2 on 2

The RPI 2 on 2 shared by Jeff Meredith is a continuous 2 on 2 small area game with a focus on defending the blue line.
Setup
- Start the game with 2 defenders inside the blue line and lines of players on the outside of the blueline along the boards.
- On the whistle, the first two player in opposite lines start. One player has a puck and they both skate through the center ice face-off dot before attacking the blue line.
- The defensive players communicate with each other and work to angle and kill the play before they are able to enter the zone to start an in-zone 2 on 2.
- The offensive team is working to score, while the defending team is working to gain possession of the puck and break it out to the next two player in the blue line. When the puck is passed to two new players, the defenders rotate out and now the players that were previously playing offense are now working to defend the blue line and the 2 on 2.
- The drill is continuous and all players should get reps at both offense and defense.
Coaching Points
- Defense:
- Work on good gaps, angles and stick position. Keep sticks on the ice to block passing lanes and to angle the offensive team to the outside of the ice.
- Do not give up the blueline easily. It is much harder to defend after the offense gets the puck inside the zone.
- Offense:
- Keep your feet moving and work hard to get the puck inside the zone.
- If you are do not have options to skate the puck into the zone, consider a soft chip into the zone and then work to gain possession of the puck.

Zone Rim- puck retrieve breakout to 3 on 1 regroup

Coach Rims Puck into the zone to start drill
Goalie can attempt to stop and set puck for Defense or Defense can retrieve the puck
Forwards will move to break out positioning:
- Strong side winger low into zone on wall (at least to hash marks)
- Center swings low as 2nd option (at least to bottom of circle)
- Weak side winger swings to middle of zone (between hash marks)
Forwards will break out of the zone then regroup and re-enter as a 3 on 1
Defense will step up to play 3 v 1
- Focus for Defense is to try to force the forwards into a 2 v 1 by playing proper gap control and limit passing options
- Make a decision early (by top of circle) allow for goalie to get good look at shot

Renegade Line Rush

The Renegade Line Rush from TJ Manastersky, the Head Coach of Brock University, practices an in tight 3 v 2, and transitions to a 5 v 5 line rush.
Setup
- On the 1st whistle, coach passes to the 3 v 2 down low group, which starts a quick attack against turned around net.
- On 2nd whistle, coach passes to any forward outside of the 3 v 2 down low group, and it starts 3 v 2 out of the corner toward the far end.
- The forwards and defense involved in the 3 v 2 down low group join to make it a 5 v 5 line rush.
- The 5 v 5 plays out until coach blows the whistle.
Coaching Points
- Defense: Communication and sort out coverage.
- Offense: Puck moves forward at blue line, puck enters inside the dots, net drive.
net front screen into 2 v1

First forward in line passes up to blue line, Defenseman take pass and walks blue line then takes shot on net
After pass 2 forwards drive to net front to set screen from point shot and play 1 rebound
After shot and rebound the 2 net front forwards will move wide in the zone and look for pass from next forward in line and break up ice to create a 2 v1
Defense after shot will back up to NZ and be ready to play attacking forwards 2 v 1
After each rep D and forwards will create new lines at other end and restart when all are done going the other way
Focus Points:
1. Good shot from point and net front presence
2. string break out pass from 3rd forward in line
3. Defense Gap control on 2 v 1 making early decision on who and when to attack as they enter zone
4. Zone entry focus for forwards, fast with speed try to turn D wide early and net drive from other forward being ready for pass or rebound off shot.
3/4 goalie, clogg middle area

3 Goalie Game

Coach calls out 3v3, 4v3, 4v4, 4v2 etc, also can start 4v2 then release more players.
Move nets to creat cross ice/union/ boards for multiple different situations
Bumper puck races

Puck Races: Tap low bumper then stop, tap top bumper then stop, now race for puck coach floated. Winner gets puck and goes in for shot, other player backchecks and tries stopping progress.
