Misc:__________________________________________________________________________
Camp 1:
half-moon- emphasis: shooting and passing (will teach proper passing technique)
Continuous Quick-Up- emphasis: skating and passing (passing while moving and moving the puck up-ice)
Low and High Scoring- emphasis: shooting (shooting on the move)
Simple 1v1 b/o- emphasis: system/hockey iq
Union Scoring Game- emphasis: small area game/fun
We will mix in some skating in-between drills
Half Moon with passing
Half Moon then pass warmup:
Line up as shown in what looks like a half-moon shape.
Pucks behind the net and then around the blue line.
One person who has a puck to start-takes a shot on net then skates behind the net to grab a puck and passes to whoever he wants in the half-moon. That person who shot and made the shot skates into the NZ and waits for the next person to get there...they begin passing back and forth. This is continuous as eventually the entire tea will be passing.
A coach can pass with Jayce once everyone has taken a shot.
proper passing technique when passing (passing should be from dot-to-dot)
Continuous Quick Up (New Jersey Devils warm-up) (from the NHL coaching mentorship site)
Continuous Quick Up New Jersey Devils warm-up
Lines on the boards as shown (around the hash marks) and then a player on each dot in the NZ as shown
1st player on both sides of the boards takes a stride or two and passes to the next player on the dot in the NZ...they then follow there pass
The player who received the pass then passes to the next player on the dot and follows his pass
The 3rd player at the dot now goes in for a shot (might put a coach in the OZ to provide some resistance)
The player who shot goes in the opposite line (so red goes into the blue line and blue goes into the red line)
RECAP:
You are receiving a puck...1-2 strides...making a pass...then following your pass.
This should be an up-tempo drill that is continuous...everyone should have a few reps
Low and High Shooting
Low and High Shooting
SHORT SIDE:
1st player in line skates with puck...around the hash marks...chip it back off the wall to the next player in line...continue to climb the circle and receive a pass back and go in for a shot.
LONG SIDE:
1st player in line skates with a puck to the NZ (just before the red line) and makes a pass back to the next in line....they then receive the puck back and go in for a shot.
Switch lines after each shot
- 2 Hard laps before this drill
Simple 1v1 breakout
Simple 1 v1 breakout drill:
D lines up on half wall around the hash marks....F's line up just above the dot in the NZ
D starts skating into a pile of pucks and grabs one of the pucks behind the net and skates with it...just after passing the net, the D should be ready to make a b/o pass to the F. As the D takes off the F should also take off timing it out skating "low and slow" in the zone and his/her feet should eventually be facing the puck when they receive the b/o pass from the D.
Ideally, they should be off the wall and as soon as they receive the pass, they should head up ice and skate to about the dot area in the NZ and skate back into the zone going 1 v 1 against the D. After the D makes that pass, they should also head up ice, set their gap and be ready for the 1v1.
This can be done on both sides of the ice if possible.
If you play D regularly you can stay in the D line, however if you play both positions rotate lines after each turn or every other turn.
- Next week we will progress to another breakout drill
Union Small Area Scoring Game
The Union Scoring Small Area Game from Topher Scott is a fun small area game where teams can score on either net. The unique setup of the nets promotes creativity, thinking outside of the box to create time & space and score goals.
Setup
- Coach chips the puck into the zone or passes to one of the players to begin the 3 vs. 3 game.
- Players can score on either net.
- Game can be stopped when a goal is scored, the goalie freezes the puck, or the coach blows the whistle. Keep score!
Coaching Points
- Head up: Players should be aware of where the other team and their teammates are. There will be lots of creative options available if you play with your head up!
- Stick on the ice: It helps the defense angle and remove passing lanes. It helps forwards tell each other where they want a pass.
- Space: Forwards work to create time and space. Defense work to take away time and space.
SAG
