U7 SKATING
U7 SKATING
Following a group full ice warm up Coach Josh will work with another on-ice helper and the U7 group to specficially work on skating at one end of the ice.
I've included a few stations, and I may also start with step overs on the goal line and one quick round of crossovers all together.
The goal is to try to specifically work into skating, feeling the edges, stopping and turning, and we'll end with a quick full ice game of asteroids.
Inside Edges Slalom Relays
In this relay race players will be forced to work on their inside edges. As players go around the stick they need to use the inside edge of the outside foot only. Once they get to the middle of the stick they can transfer their weight to the other foot and use the inside edge of that foot to go around the next stick.
Setup
This station can be set up the exact same way as the one step and two foot jumps relays. Place two rows of 5 sticks with a tire at the end as shown in the diagram. Divide up the players in to two teams and have each team form a line in front of the row of sticks.
Skate Cross Station Progression #2
Turns & Stops With Shots (Quarter Ice)
This station drill for the Mite and Novice age levels is mostly about the fundamentals of stops & starts and control turns. We add in a shot at the end to keep the players engaged and to have something to look forward to at the end of their repetition.
Set Up
Place a net at each end of the station with a goalie (if available). Split up the players into equal lines in opposite corners. Place up to 5 cones slightly staggered down each side of the station (see diagram) and place the pucks at the and of the cones more to the middle of the ice.
On one side the players will do a two foot hockey stop and try to spray as much snow as they can on each cone. On the other side they will work on control turns. After they go through the cones they can pick up a puck and take a shot before going to the end of the other line.
