Sully 2 on 2 Transition Game

The Sully 2 on 2 Transition Game from Michael Peca, is a high-tempo small-area game designed to develop quick transition skills, offensive movement, and defensive awareness. The drill encourages players to convert defense into offense efficiently while emphasizing strong defensive details and communication.

Setup:

  • Coach Placement:
    • The coach starts with a puck at center ice and deposits it into the offensive zone.
  • Player Positions:
    • The Circles (O) are the initial offensive team, attacking the net in their zone.
    • The X's (X) are the defenders, working to create a turnover and transition to offense.
    • Additional players line up just inside the zone, ready to rotate in.

Execution:

  • Offensive Play:
    • The coach sends the puck into the zone to start the game.
    • The Circles (O) get the first touch and immediately begin their offensive attack in a 2-on-2 battle.
    • Offensive Objectives:
      • Utilize movement and puck support.
      • Communicate to create scoring chances quickly.
      • Avoid prolonged perimeter play—get pucks to the net.
  • Defensive Play & Transition:
    • The X's (X) defend aggressively, aiming to:
      • Close space quickly.
      • Defend from the inside-out, taking away passing lanes.
      • Eliminate backdoor plays and keep opponents to the outside.
    • Once the defensive team forces a turnover, they must transition the puck to the next two players on the other side of the ice, waiting near the center line.
    • Key Defensive Transition Concepts:
      • Players should communicate visually or verbally before making a pass.
      • Avoid blindly whipping pucks off the wall—use controlled plays.
      • Utilize direct or bank passes to initiate a structured transition.
  • Continuous Transition Play:
    • Once the X’s transition the puck, they now attack the opposite net.
    • The Circles must quickly transition to defense, backchecking and defending through the middle.
    • Defensive players must:
      • Close gaps quickly to neutralize offensive speed.
      • Extend their sticks to disrupt passing lanes.
      • Eliminate backdoor plays by defending from inside out.

Key Teaching Points:

  • Quick Transition: Players must immediately shift from defense to offense and vice versa.
  • Puck Support & Communication: Verbal and visual cues help facilitate effective transitions.
  • Defensive Discipline: Defenders should pressure quickly, angle properly, and maintain active sticks.
  • Efficient Breakouts: Teach players to avoid careless turnovers when transitioning to offense.

Variations:

  • Can play 2 on 2 or 3 on 3.
