A cutback is a great tool for players to create time and space for themselves. The quicker and more explosive you can make them coming out of them the more effective it will be. In this clip Garland does a few really nice things down below the goal line and it leads to a goal.
What to Watch
- He positions himself to go in the direction of the puck as it is rimmed to set himself up for the first cutback.
- This also makes it easier for him to retrieve the puck off the wall.
- On his 2nd cutback he uses the outside edge of his left skate and the inside edge of his right skate to make a sharp turn to his forehand.
- After the cutback he keeps his feet moving to help create separation.
- When he does this his top hand is not folded under but stays off his hip.
- Coming out of the cutback his head is up and the puck is in a position for him to make a play right away.
