Please Note: The Practice of the Week is usually designed to be utilized across multiple age levels. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team's age and skill levels. IHS should always be used as a starting point and you can add/remove constraints to fit your team.
Practice Theme: Retrieving the puck along the boards happens countless times throughout the course of the game and it is where many 1 on 1 battles are won or lost. When players collect the puck off of the boards is not usually a highlight-reel play, but if they are able to learn a few simple concepts, they will be able to impact the flow of the game. The purpose of this practice is to get your players comfortable with retrievals in different situations and and to work on 3 retrieval concepts. These concepts will allow players to create space so they have time to make a play and they will become much harder to hit.
Key Coaching Points
- Shoulder Scan - This is concept # 1 because it is most important. Looking over your shoulder will allow you to know if you have time, need to make an evasive move to create time and also allows you to see where your support is.
- Retrieve the Puck at an Angle - This will allow you to keep your speed up while you are going to get the puck so you can make a play. Plus it is much safer than going head-on into the boards.
- Use Deception on Your Retrievals - Implementing skating, stick, body deception into your retrievals when you have pressure will create more time and space for you to make a play.

Stick Deception On Breakout Retrieval by Jack Johnson
Using deception on breakout retrievals can open up just enough time for your teammates to have an easier time breaking out of the zone.
What to Watch
- Jack Johnson sprints back to retrieve a dumped in puck by the Edmonton Oilers
- Johnson checks over his shoulder multiple times to read the heavy forechecking
- Johnson uses his body & stick to sell misinformation to the incoming F1
- with a quick stick wave at the last second he is able to sell f1 that he is rounding the net before quickly cutting up the strong side wall & executes the breakout
Sergachev and Kucherov Scanning/ Shoulder Checking
Great players are constantly scanning and shoulder checking to build their awareness. These 2 clips featuring Sergachev and Kucherov are nice examples to show your players that this indeed is a skill. Be sure to help your players build this habit by working them into your practices.
What to Watch
- Sergacheck shoulder checks to read the pressure and makes the right play up ice
- Kucherov gives the slightest little shoulder check which enables him to find the open teammate for the GWG goal
Bobrovsky pulls puck off wall for easy forehand retrieval
This is a little thing that makes a BIG difference. When goalies stop the puck behind the net and pull the puck off the wall they should try to leave it so that it is an easy forehand retrieval for the defense.
What to Watch
- Bobrovsky stops the puck on the wall and pays attention to the defenseman that is retrieving the puck.
- He pulls it off the wall and places it in perfect position so his teammate can retrieve the puck at full speed on their forehand.
