Please Note: The Practice of the Week is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this to build ideas to develop your own practice.  With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team's age and skill levels. IHS should always be used as a starting point and you can add/remove constraints to fit your team.

Practice Theme:
Passing and moving to open space should be one of the non-negotiable habits that you are instilling in your team.  The drills and games in this practice are designed to help your players work on passing and moving to open space with urgency.

3 Key Focus Points

  1. Head Up: Keep your head up so you know where your teammates are and where the open ice is.
  2. Pass & Move To Open Space: As soon as you pass the puck to your teammate, explode to open space. Do not stop and stare at your pass.
  3. Use Deception: Just like you can fake out a player when you have the puck, you can also fake out the defenders who are covering you when you don't have the puck.

Coaching Clips

Panarin & Kuznetsov Give and Go's That Led to Goals

https://vimeo.com/425219730/33ac6abcaa

The clips above show two examples of passing and moving to open space, which is commonly known as Give and Go or Pass and Move.

What to Watch:

  1. Head UpKeep your head up so you know where your teammates are and where the open space is.
  2. Explode to Space: As soon as you pass the puck to your teammate, explode to open space and be ready to receive the puck back. You can also add in deception to make the other team think you are going a different way and then explode to the opposite direction (this is shown in the Panarin example).
  3. Speed Is Hard to Defend: The faster you can go to the opening the better because you can catch the other team flat footed (this is shown in the Kuznetsov example).

Offensive Zone Switches with Give and Go by Stars

https://vimeo.com/887140030

Switches in the offensive zone can be really tough to defend against. In this clip the Dallas Stars do two switches back to back with a give and go which leads to a goal. Overall this is a very creative offensive zone play that is a result of great puck support and constant movement.

What to Watch

  • Stars win the loose puck retrieval off of the shot.
  • They do two switches which really confuse the Avalanche defenders.
  • When they do the switches they leave the puck on the forehand for easy pick up by their teammates.
  • On the 2nd switch the player without the puck continues into the slot to get a return pass from the player they gave the puck to.

Drill Maker Image:

Great give and go face-off play by the Toronto Maple Leafs that creates a ton of space for to make a play.  The leafs get 3-high quick and have really fast execution here.

What to Watch

  • Marner gets high immediately and opens up to provide a nice target
  • Reilly executes the give and go with purpose
  • Matthews with a great pop-off to find open ice
