Lesson 5 - Video 3 - Game Situation Adding Movement to the Puck Before Releasing
This video focuses on adding quick cuts, pushes, and lateral movement to change the angle of the shot, making it harder for goalies and defenders to predict and react effectively.
Coaching Points:
-
Changing the Angle:
- Use quick cuts and pushes with your feet and hands to move laterally before shooting.
- Fake a move (e.g., pass or dump) to mislead defenders before transitioning to a shot.
- Protect the puck during lateral movement by keeping it close to your body.
-
Footwork and Weight Transfer:
- Incorporate inside or outside foot cuts to shift your body and create shooting space.
- Transfer weight from your outside foot to your inside foot to maintain balance and power during lateral moves.
- Drive your shoulders toward the net even if your feet are moving laterally to maintain shot accuracy.
-
Stick and Blade Control:
- Avoid excessive toe dragging; instead, focus on subtle blade adjustments to pull and push the puck.
- Use the full blade, not just the toe, when pulling the puck inward for better control and release power.
- Practice opening and closing your blade to mimic passing or shooting angles, increasing deception.
-
Body and Hand Positioning:
- Keep hands away from your body and your top hand up to allow for smooth blade manipulation.
- Stay low with bent knees, enabling quicker direction changes and stronger shots.
-
Progression and Execution:
- Start practicing slowly, focusing on smooth transitions between pulling and pushing the puck.
- Gradually add speed and head movement (e.g., looking away before shooting) to increase deception.
- Focus on maintaining puck control while moving laterally, ensuring the shot remains quick and accurate.
-
Advanced Tips:
- Combine lateral movement with deceptive head and shoulder fakes to draw defenders and goalies off balance.
- Practice both forehand and backhand pulls to push transitions for versatility during games.
