This video focuses on integrating stickhandling into shooting drills to simulate game-like scenarios, emphasizing quick puck movement from stickhandling to shooting for increased deception and improved offensive skills.

Coaching Points for Shooting Off of a Stickhandle:

  1. Top Hand Control:

    • Maintain proper top-hand positioning for better blade control, keeping the stick close to the body for power and precision.
  2. Blade Cupping:

    • Use the forehand and backhand cupping techniques to manipulate the puck efficiently and set it quickly for the shot.
  3. Quick Transitions:

    • Focus on moving the puck swiftly from stickhandling to the shooting position, minimizing time and space for defenders to react.
  4. Position Awareness:

    • Practice both stickhandling in front of and beside the body, with an emphasis on protecting the puck while maintaining readiness to shoot.
  5. Deception Through Stickhandling:

    • Use subtle stickhandling movements to mislead defenders and goalies before transitioning into a shot.
  6. Game-Like Simulations:

    • Incorporate movement patterns like cutting, dragging, or protecting the puck while moving into shooting areas to mimic real-game situations.
  7. Controlled Speed:

    • Begin drills slowly to refine technique, then gradually increase speed as players become more comfortable.

Encourage players to practice manipulating the puck with both forehand and backhand stickhandling before shooting, emphasizing smooth transitions and maintaining puck control under pressure.
