The Full Ice Shooting Warm-Up Progression from Marty Wilford gets players skating, passing and shooting early on during a practice.
Setup
- Pucks and players on all 4 blue lines.
- Coaches or cones at the center ice face-off circles.
- Progression 1 (inside coaches / cones):
- Two players cross and drop a pass and skate up the center of the ice making one touch passes before they do a one touch pass to a quick release shot. Players should work to not get to far or behind each other as they make their way up the ice.
- After one side goes, the opposite side goes and makes their way down the ice.
- Progression 2 (outside coaches / cones):
- Two players cross and drop a pass and skate up the outside of the ice.
- Part 1 - they make one pass in center ice and the player with the puck skates up the ice to get a shot while the player without the puck looks for a rebound.
- Part 2 - same as part 1, but you make a seem pass just over the blue line. The player takes a quick release shot while the player wihtout the puck looks for a rebound.
- Part 3 - same as part 2, but instead of taking a quick release shot just over the blueline, they rip a pass to their teammate that is driving to the net for a backdoor pass.
- Two players cross and drop a pass and skate up the outside of the ice.
Coaching Points
- Players need to communicate!
- Players should keep their sticks on the ice so their teammates know where they would like the puck.
- Work on quick passes and quick shots.
Variations
- Can have coaches or cones at the center ice face-off circles.
- Can add coaches to give light pressure in center ice so players need to keep their heads up and make decisions while passing.
