3 v 2 with Angling Backchecker is a high tempo continuous 3 v 2 drill that turns into a 3 v 3.
Setup
- Cone on edge of center ice circle (as shown in diagram).
- Defenders in the bench (or out of the play somewhere).
- Forwards are lined up on top half of the face off circles with defenders on the blue line.
- On the whistle, a 3 v 2 starts out between the F1 forwards and the D1 defenders. The play continues down on the other end until a goal is scored or the coach blows the whistle.
- When the 3 v 2 passes center ice, a new set of defenders (shown as D2 in the diagram) jumps out to the blue line.
- On the second whistle, the highest F1 forward in the first 3 v 2 sprints down around the cone to begin to angle the new oncoming forwards. The D1 defenders go off of the ice.
- The second 3 v 2 starts up and the forwards can go anywhere on the ice they want. This continues down the ice and this drill is continuous with the highest forward always coming back to be the angling backchecker.
Coaching Points
- The angling forward should keep their head up and read the play to make sure they angle to the area of the ice that has the puck.
- The angling forward should work on proper angling techniques: keep their stick on the ground to block passing lanes and come at the puck carrier in an angle that drives them to the outside of the ice.
- The 3 forwards with the puck on the rush should be aware of the defenders and the oncoming forchecker and work to move the puck away from pressure to prevent a turnover.
- The forwards should aim to enter the zone with puck possession but if they are unable to, chip the puck into space and work on retrieving it.
Variations
- Can place the cone that the backchecker skates around closer to the defensive zone (such as the center ice face-off dot, or the opposite line in the face-off circle, to make sure the backcheckers are able to come back in time to angle.
Great drill, the team loved it. Thanks!
