The NZ Regroup drill by Daniel Paille allows teams to practice neutral zone regrouping and finishes with a 3 v 2 or 4 v 2 rush attack. The drill can also progress to add a backchecker to create extra pressure on the rush.
Setup
- The forwards start on boards at far blue line while all four defenders set up on the blue line, dot width.
- On whistle, the first three forwards start with first in line passing to one of the defenders (pass 1), who then passes it back to the second forward in line (pass 2), who then passes back to the defender, who goes D to D with their partner.
- As the defenders are going D to D, all 3 forwards start to fill lanes to become passing options. The D passes to one of the forwards and then they regroup with the second set of forwards to begin a 3 v 2 rush attack.
Variations
- Can add a tracker / backchecker
- Can have the weak side defender join the rush to make it a 4 v 2.
Coaching Points
- Forward should be aware of eachother and make sure to swing in different lanes.
- Forwards should have sticks on the ice and be passing options at all times while facing the pucks.
- Defense should work to keep forwards to outside of the ice.
