Alternate 1 on 1 x 3

The Alternate 1 on 1 x 3 shared by Daniel Paille is a 2 part drill that allows players to work on 1 on 1 concepts in different areas of the offensive zone. Part 2 of the drill creates 1 on 1, 2 on 1 and 2 on 2 opportunities with the same setup.

Setup

  • Can run out of one end, or both ends of the ice.
  • Pucks in both corners, and just inside the blueline as shown in the diagram.
  • Player rotates as follows: when drill is completed, Player 4 fills in Player 1 position, Player 1 to Player 2 position, Player 2 to Player 3 position, and Player 3 to Player 4 position.
  • In the diagram above, we show the movement of both the forwards and defenseman in the first series of the drill, and then for series 2 and 3 we only show the path of the forwards. Watch the full video to see the defensemans rotation. Coaches can have one defender handle all 3 1 on 1's or have a rotation (as Coach Paille describes) where after the forward shoots, they transition to defense on the next series.

Part 1 (1 on 1) x3

  • Player 1 start at faceoff dot and Player 4 starts at hashmarks. On whistle, Player 1 will pick up puck in corner, while Player 4 will skate to near side post, stop, touch post with stick and angle Player 1. Ideally, Player 1 will work towards top of circle for shot on net (Player 1 can tight turn for net drive if needed).
  • Player 2 will start at opposite faceoff dot. Player 1 will then stop at far side post, touch post with stick, and angle Player 2. Player 2 will pick up puck in opposite corner. Ideally, Player 2 will create a net drive scenario (Player 2 can skate across top of circle if needed).
  • Player 3 will start at top of circle. Player 2 will then touch near side post and angle Player 3 near blue line. Player 3 will pick up a puck angling down the wall and find lane to net, either across top of circle or puck protection with net drive.

Part 2 (1 on 1 to 2 on 1 to 2 on 2)

  • Player 1 starts at faceoff dot and Player 4 starts at hashmarks. On whistle, Player 1 will pick up puck in corner, while Player 4 will skate to near side post, stop, touch post with stick and angle Player 1. Ideally, Player 1 will work towards top of circle for shot on net (Player 1 can tight turn for net drive if needed).
  • Next, Player 4 will skate behind net to join and support Player 2. Player 2 will start at opposite faceoff dot. Player 1 will then stop at far side post, touch post with stick, and angle Player 2. Player 2 will pick up puck in opposite corner. Player 2 will create a tight turn and either drop pass to Player 4 or keep puck and attack net 2 on 1 vs Player 1.
  • Player 1 will skate to blue line and support Player 3. Player 3 will start at top of circle. Player 2 will then touch near side post, Player 4 will stop and touch far side post, and angle Player 1 and Player 3 near blue line. Player 3 will pick up a puck angling down the wall and find lane to net with support from Player 1, either across top of circle or puck protection with net drive.

Coaching Points

  • Defenders should keep stick on the ice and work to angle forwards to outside of ice.
  • Forwards should protect the puck and work to create opportunities to drive to the net and take a shot.

Variations

  • For Part # 1, you can transition forward to defenseman as Coach Paille explained in the video, or you can have one defenseman play all 3 1 on 1s.
