Continuous 2 on 2 with Ozone D Options

This version of the continuous 2 on 2 adds an interesting element for the offensive zone. The drill is set up with two forwards starting at the top of the circles and two defenders just outside the blue line and just inside the dots. On the whistle:

  • the forwards for team 1 attack in a 2 on 2 against the team 2 defenders
  • once they enter the zone then two defenders jump out to the blue line for team 1
  • two forwards jump out to the wall high int he zone for team 2
  • in zone the forwards for team 1 can use their defenders at the blue line which creates a 4 on 2
  • the defenders for team 2 try to create a turnover and move the puck to the team 2 forwards
  • when they do this then the team 2 forwards attack the team 1 defenders going back the other way

Coaching Points

  • on the 2 on 2 rush the forwards need to get the puck deep into the zone even if it means chipping the puck past the D (try not to turn the puck over high in the zone)
  • the defenders should have good gaps when playing the 2 on 2
  • forwards should try to isolate a defender and create a 2 on 1 instead of a 2 on 2
  • if the puck is moved back to the D in the offensive zone then 1 forward should try to take away the goalies eyes and create traffic in front while the other forward gets in position for a pass or tip from the side
  • the defenders should try to take care of sticks and clear the traffic in front of the net so the goalie has a clear view of the puck
