Hit The Tire Game With 1 Goalie is a fun spin on the hit the tire game or a normal 3 v 3 game. The setup encourages creative play from the offense to support each other and move the puck quickly, along with challenging the goaltender to work on their edges and read the play.
Setup
- Place a tire (or cone) in the center of the zone. This will be the "net" that the goalie is trying to defend and the players are trying to score on.
- On the whistle, a coach dumps the puck into the zone, which begins the 3 on 3.
- The team with the puck is trying to score, and the team without the puck is trying to get possession. If the defense gets puck possession then they are trying to score.
- If a puck goes out of play, throw a new puck into the zone.
- Should be played at a competitive pace (30 - 40 seconds).
Coaching Points
- The goalie should work on reading the play and their edges.
- Offense needs to work on supporting their teammates and working on quick shots after a pass to hit the tire while the goalie is still moving.
- Defense should keep their sticks on the ice to block passing lanes and work to angle players to outside of the ice.
Variations
- Can play the same game without a goalie.
- Can have 2 tires with no goalies and play Hit The Tire Game With No Goalies
- Can have 2 tires with a goalie around each tire and place the tires on the face-off dots.
