The Toronto 3 on 2 from Wes Wolfe is a 3 on 2 rush drill that ends with a 3 on 2 cycle down low. This drill can progress to a 4 on 2.
Setup
- Add forwards on the blue lines along the boards and defenders along the boards in the red line.
- On the whistle, F1 passes to D1. D1 transitions the puck up ice to F3, who is joined by F2 and F1 for a 3 on 2 rush.
- On the second whistle, the coach rims a puck along the boards to create a 3 on 2 down low.
- On the third whistle, one of the defenders (D2 or D3) jumps out to collect the a pass from the next line of forwards, and they transition down us 3 on 2 against 2 new defenders that jumped out to center ice.
- The drill is continuous.
Coaching Points
- Forwards on the rush should all work to get in their own lanes and keep their stick on the ice to be ready for passes.
- Defenders keep stick on the ice to block passing lanes and angle players to the outside of the ice.
- In the 3 on 2 down low, players should work hard to get open and support the puck carrier.
Variations
- The D who creates the transition pass can join the rush, making it a 4 on 2.
