Please Note: The Practice of the Week is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this to build ideas to develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team's age and skill levels. IHS should always be used as a starting point and you can add/remove constraints to fit your team.
Practice Theme: 2v1 situations happen all over the ice. This practice plan is focused on puck support & capitalizing in different 2v1 situations
The 3 Key Focus Points
- Finding Open Ice - encourage players to find open ice and create passing lanes for their teammates. Pass & Move - don't stare at your passes
- Communication - encourage your players to use verbal and non-verbal communication to let their teammates know they are open
- Exchanges/Switches - try to get your players to work on some basic exchanges/switches and show them how it creates time and space
A lot of players stare at their passes, encouraging your players to Pass and Move is a great start to developing more space and opportunities in these situations. Try to instill this mindset to get moving as soon as you pass to find open ice and become an option.

Whitecloud and Smith High Switch in Offensive Zone
Switches (aka scissors) can be an effective way to create space anywhere on the ice, especially in the offensive zone. This switch high in the zone creates enough confusion that it gives Whitecloud a lot of time and space to walk in and score.
What to Watch
- When Smith receives the pass from Whitecloud he has enough patience to draw in two defenders before playing the puck into space.
- He plays the puck into space so that Whitecloud can pick up the puck on his forehand.
Vincent Trocheck Quick Pass on 2 v 1
Moving the puck quick before the defenseman's stick is a great way to take control of a 2v1 offensively. It takes away the defenseman's ability to angle you and gets both him and the goalie moving early.
What To Watch
- Trocheck quickly scans the ice before approaching the puck and is aware of the 2 v 1 opportunity
- Teräväinen (#86) makes himself available in a good passing seam
- Trocheck delivers a quick pass ahead of the defenseman's stick
Kaprizov Finds Open Ice on Creative Play
This goal from the Wild is beautiful. At the end of the day it's two creative players reading off each other in an unstructured setting.
What to Watch
- Nice cross drop at the top of the zone
- After Kaprizov dishes you can see him scan, read Zuccarello and identify open ice
- He pops away from the defenders and Zuccarello is able to find him for a quick shot
