The 2 on 1 to 3 on 2 Backcheck drill, shared by Brad Flynn, allows teams to practice 2 on 1's and 3 on 2's
Setup
- Forwards are at the blueline, defenseman are at center ice along the boards.
- On the whistle, F1 and F2 step out and cut the blue line. F1 starts with the puck.
- A defenseman (D1) jumps out to play the 2 on 1.
- The 2 on 1 continues and plays out until the coach blows the whistle.
- F3 takes a puck, cuts though the crease, while F1 & F2 work to be supportive breakout options.
- Two new defenders jump out to play a 3 on 2 vs F1, F2, F3.
- Coaches can have D1 can work with the coach and take a point shot on net while the 3 on 2 is going, or they can join the rush to make it a 4 on 2.
- After the 3 on 2 rush, coach blows a whistle to start a new 2 on 1. The high forward will be a backchecker on the new 2 on 1. The backchecker will jump into the back of the original F3 line.
Coaching Points
- Defenseman keep sticks on the ice to block passing lanes and work to keep the puck to the outside of the ice.
- Forwards keep your head up, communicate, and support your teammates.
- Backchecker use long strides, keep stick on the ice and work to backcheck through the middle of the ice.
Variations
- Coaches can have D1 can work with the coach and take a point shot on net while the 3 on 2 is going, or they can join the rush to make it a 4 on 2.
