Strong Side Reverse Breakout by Devils

A strong side reverse is when the stong side defense retrieves the puck and sells that they are going to go behind the net. The weak side D comes over for support and the puck is played to the weak side D by reversing the direction back up the strong side. This is a good example by the New Jersey Devils.

What to Watch

• The strong side D goes into the corner to retrieve the puck and is pressured hard by the Rangers' F1 forechecker.
• The weak side D comes over to support.
• The puck is reversed, taking F1 out of the play, and giving the weak side D more time to make a play.
• The right winger also does a nice job of blocking out the defense high in the zone and presenting a forehand target.
• When the puck is passed to them they are able to make a play to the center on the forehand while protecting the puck.
• The center stays well below the puck so they can skate into the pass.
