Simple Passing & Shooting Drill

Get Full Access

The Simple Passing & Shooting Drill allows players to work on passing and shooting during practice. This drill can be modified in a variety of ways to practice different passing & shooting skills depending on the skill level of your team.

Setup

  • Coaches can set up this drill as a half ice drill (as shown in the diagram) or in a smaller space if working in a station.
  • On the whistle, a player skates around the cone, receives a pass from a player or a coach, and fires a puck on net.
  • After the first shot, the player skates around the second cone to receive a pass from the opposite side of the ice, and shoots a second shot. The player should attack any rebounds available after this shot if there is a goalie in net.

Coaching Points

  • Players should keep their stick on the ice and call for the pass.
  • Coaches can have players work on a variety of shooting techniques during this drill. They can work on quick release snap shots, two touch, or wrist shots.

Variations

  • Coaches can have players pass the puck from the slot instead of a coach.
  • Players can work on different passing & shooting techniques.
  • Coaches can apply light pressure that players must pass around so both the shooter and the passer need to be more aware of the surroundings.
