Shadow Defensive Skating, No Crossover Drill

Get Full Access

Drill Setup:

  • 2 cones about15 feet apart.
  • 2 players face each other. Players perform a figure 8 skating type pattern always facing the player across from them.
  • When the player goes to pivot they should use a backward inside edge transition and not a crossover to change directions.
  • Players continue this pattern until coach changes group.

Drill Purpose:

  • The purpose of this drill is to introduce the idea of using a backward inside edge to change direction when containing a offensive player defensively. If players really struggle with this drill then it is suggested to practice backwards inside drills and backwards single drills to build confidence in this skill.
  • This drill is meant to allow players to slowdown the skill and feel it out. Ideally want players to be able to shadow each other because the skill is used in a containment situation when a player would be "shadowing" an offensive player.
  • Can also introduce stick on stick position as well with eyes up as a detail once footwork is adequate.

Common Mistakes:

  • Players will want to crossover as most have never been taught any different to transition. The biggest issue most players have is they don't weight shift fully onto that one leg. When they keep their center/weight between their legs it doesn't allow them to load, open their hips and push of fto the opposite foot.
