The Power Play Game Long Short from Wes Wolfe is designed to challenge your power play units in a condensed space, encouraging quick decisions, precise puck movement, and effective play under pressure. The drill can be tailored to include different penalty kill configurations to match your team’s skill level.
Setup:
- Net Placement:
- One net is set lengthwise on one half of the ice.
- The other net is set widthwise on the opposite half.
- Player Positions:
- Power Play Unit 1 sets up on one side (lengthwise).
- Power Play Unit 2 sets up on the other side (widthwise).
- Coaches are positioned near the middle with pucks.
- Penalty Killers: Add 2, 3, or 4 penalty killers on each side based on the desired level of difficulty.
Execution:
- Starting the Drill:
- The coach rims a puck to one side (either lengthwise or widthwise).
- The receiving side (Power Play Unit) executes a 5-on-3 power play, while the penalty killers attempt to clear the puck.
- The opposite side rests and prepares for their turn.
- Switching Sides:
- When the penalty killers successfully clear the puck, they send it to the opposite side.
- The resting Power Play Unit now transitions to a 5-on-3 power play while the previous side rests.
- Gameplay Rules:
- Penalty killers focus on clearing the puck quickly and effectively.
- Power play players work on maintaining possession, quick puck movement, and creating scoring chances in a small area.
- Rotations:
- Play continues for 30–40 seconds before players rest.
- Rotate players between sides (lengthwise and widthwise) to ensure equal reps in both areas.
Key Teaching Points:
- Quick Decisions: Encourage players to make fast, effective decisions with limited time and space.
- Puck Movement: Focus on crisp, accurate passes to maintain puck possession under pressure.
- Positioning: Reinforce proper power play positioning and spacing in a condensed area.
- Penalty Killers: Teach effective puck clears and defensive positioning.
Variations:
- Adjust the number of penalty killers to increase or decrease pressure.
- Allow penalty killers to apply more aggressive pressure for added difficulty.
- Experiment with time constraints to simulate real-game scenarios.
