Passing the Puck While In Motion

Get Full Access

This video explains the key elements of passing while in motion, focusing on leading the receiving player and maintaining good hand positioning.

Coaching Points:

  1. Lead the Receiver: Pass the puck in front of the receiving player to allow them to continue skating without breaking stride or reaching back.
  2. Hand Positioning: Keep the top hand up and the bottom hand in a strong position, pushing with the bottom hand to add power and accuracy.
  3. Follow Through: Always follow through in the direction you want the pass to go to ensure it reaches the intended target.
  4. Provide a Target: The receiving player should have their stick on the ice to signal where they want the pass, making it easier for the passer to hit the target.
  5. Communication: Encourage players to call for the puck while skating to improve timing and ensure smooth execution.
  6. Adjust for Backhand Passes: For hard backhand passes, use a "smack back" technique to control and settle the puck effectively.
