The Honey Hole Shooting Drill from NewEdge Hockey is a great exercise to help defenseman to practice shooting around traffic at the blue line.
Setup
- Setup a net just inside of the blueline (as pictured in the video & diagram).
- Setup a passer (D2) at the top of the mid-wall and a second passer at the blue line (D3).
- D1 will jump into the drill and perform 3 types of shots:
- Shot # 1: Around the net
- Shot # 2: Fake behind the net and shoot
- Shot # 3: Jump around the net to the net aka the Honey Hole!
- The objective is to get your first 2 shots off quickly. Just clear the traffic (the net) and get your shot through.
- Do not move in zone during your first 2 shots, move laterally, and as mentioned just clear the traffic and get the shot through. Jump into space (the honey hole) with purpose and receive and release quickly!
Coaching Points
- Always communicate and present your stick exactly where you want the pass.
- When leading with your heels be sure to pull the puck toward your toe caps to create a new (clear) lane for your shot versus waiting until you clear without pulling (time and space).
