The Glide Turn and Shooting Drill helps players practice gliding, picking up speed off of a glide, and shooting quickly after a pass. This drill can be modified in a vareity of ways depending on the skill level of your team.
Setup
- Pucks in the corner with either a player or a coach that will pass.
- Players on the blueline.
- On the whistle, the player from the blue line works on gliding, then turning around cone # 1, picking up speed to glide around cone # 2, then receives a pass before taking a shot on net and looking for any rebounds.
- If you want players passing the puck, the player who shot the puck now goes into the corner to become the next passer.
Coaching Points
- Players should keep control of their stick and keep it on the ice and in front of them, ready to accept a pass.
- Players should focus on good glide techniques and keep a wide base with their inside foot leading the way around the turn.
- Players should work on shooting quickly after the pass.
Variations
- Players or coaches can pass out of the corner.
- Coaches can add more cones, or set them up differently.
- Coaches can apply light pressure in between the shooter and passer so they both need to keep their head up and pass around the pressure.
- Players can start with the puck at the blue line and make a pass to a player in the corner, then go around the cones to get a pass back before they take a shot.
- Players can work on a vareity of shooting techinques.
