The DV3 Warm Up Drill from Tyler Bielby is a great warm-up drill that gets everyone involved in the beginning of a practice. The drill goes out of both ends and there are three versions.
Setup
- Full ice setup with both goalies in net. Defenseman are in the center ice circle and forwards are broken up into 4 groups in the corners as shown in the diagram.
- Version 1, on the whistle, two defenseman jump out, and the forward with the puck passes to the defenseman, who goes D to D to Wall and passes the puck to the other forward coming up the boards. That forward passes to the forward who started the drill and is swinging through the middle. The forward enters the zone and takes a shot on net.
- Version 2: same start as version one except when the defenseman get the puck they go D to D to Middle. Then the middle forward kicks the puck out the forward on the wall, and that forward takes the puck down and takes a shot on net.
- Version 3: same start as the first 2 versions except the defenseman go D to D, and then the D with the puck takes the puck outside and then passes the puck back to their partner on hinge. That defenseman then hits the forward on the wall who is timing the play, and they pass it to the forward swinging though the center, who takes the puck and takes a shot on net.
- This is a continuous drill and sides should alternate reps.
Coaching Points
- This is a warm-up drill early in practice and all players should be practicing good habits like keeping their sticks on the ice to let their teammates know where to pass the puck, communicating, supporting their teammates, and keeping their head up.
- Forwards should practice timing their routes correctly so they are not too early or too late to receive a pass.
