This video focuses on executing a wrist shot off a lateral pass, emphasizing proper hand positioning, puck cradling, weight transfer, and quick release to capitalize on scoring opportunities like two-on-one situations.
Coaching Points:
-
Hand Positioning:
- Keep hands away from the body and directed toward the incoming pass to ensure proper reception.
- Avoid tight or static hand positions that hinder quick transitions into a shot.
-
Puck Cradling:
- Cradle the puck upon reception to bring it directly into the shooting box, maintaining control and readiness to shoot.
- Avoid keeping the puck too far out in front or to the side, as it reduces shot power and accuracy.
-
Weight Transfer:
- Transfer weight from your back foot to your front foot as you release the puck, enhancing power and stability.
- Drive your shoulders toward the net while pushing on the bottom hand to flex the stick for an effective release.
-
Quick Release:
- Aim to release the puck as soon as possible after receiving the pass, minimizing the time for goalies or defenders to react.
- Practice smooth transitions from catching the pass to shooting to build speed and fluidity.
-
Avoid Common Mistakes:
- Don’t leave the puck in front of the body or attempt to shoot with an open blade, as this compromises power and accuracy.
- Ensure proper setup in the shooting box to maintain versatility for shooting, passing, or stickhandling.
Practising wrist shots off lateral passes improves quick decision-making and execution in game scenarios, enhancing scoring opportunities in high-pressure situations.
