Lesson 1 - Video 1 - Getting the Proper Stick
This video explains the proper positioning of hands and arms on a hockey stick, emphasizing control, power, and flexibility for effective shooting, passing, and stickhandling.
Coaching Points for Hand and Arm Positioning:
-
Top Hand Position:
- Ensure the "V" between the thumb and index finger aligns with the narrow edge of the stick shaft.
- Avoid flipping the hand over, which disrupts blade control and stickhandling.
-
Knob Placement:
- Position the knob of the stick inside the palm of your glove, either centred or slightly to the side, based on personal preference.
- Do not let the knob sit outside the glove for better control.
-
Bottom Hand Placement:
- Maintain a distance of about hip width or one glove length between the top and bottom hands.
- Avoid gripping the hands too close together, which limits power and flexibility.
-
Hand Spacing and Arm Position:
- Keep hands and arms away from the body to allow greater stick flex and power in shots.
- Maintain a slight "headlock" pocket space between the top hand and the body for optimal positioning.
-
Role of Hands and Arms:
- The top hand controls the stick blade for precise movements.
- The bottom hand provides power during shooting, passing, and stickhandling.
-
Practice Proper Form:
- Regularly practice keeping hands spaced correctly and away from the body to enhance all stickhandling and shooting techniques.
