Lesson 1 - Video 1 - Getting the Proper Stick

This video explains the proper positioning of hands and arms on a hockey stick, emphasizing control, power, and flexibility for effective shooting, passing, and stickhandling.

Coaching Points for Hand and Arm Positioning:

  1. Top Hand Position:

    • Ensure the "V" between the thumb and index finger aligns with the narrow edge of the stick shaft.
    • Avoid flipping the hand over, which disrupts blade control and stickhandling.
  2. Knob Placement:

    • Position the knob of the stick inside the palm of your glove, either centred or slightly to the side, based on personal preference.
    • Do not let the knob sit outside the glove for better control.
  3. Bottom Hand Placement:

    • Maintain a distance of about hip width or one glove length between the top and bottom hands.
    • Avoid gripping the hands too close together, which limits power and flexibility.
  4. Hand Spacing and Arm Position:

    • Keep hands and arms away from the body to allow greater stick flex and power in shots.
    • Maintain a slight "headlock" pocket space between the top hand and the body for optimal positioning.
  5. Role of Hands and Arms:

    • The top hand controls the stick blade for precise movements.
    • The bottom hand provides power during shooting, passing, and stickhandling.
  6. Practice Proper Form:

    • Regularly practice keeping hands spaced correctly and away from the body to enhance all stickhandling and shooting techniques.
