Welcome to Lesson 1 - Video 1 of the Deconstructing the Wrist Shot Video Series!
This video provides guidance on selecting the proper hockey stick, emphasizing the importance of choosing the correct flex, size, length, and knob to suit the player's needs and ensure effective performance.
Coaching Points for Selecting the Proper Stick:
-
Choose the Right Flex:
- For young players, a 30 flex is ideal; older and stronger players may require stiffer shafts, such as 65, 75, or 85 flex.
- Ensure some flex remains for effective shooting.
-
Determine the Appropriate Stick Size:
- Youth, intermediate, and adult sticks cater to different age groups and player strengths.
- Check the stick’s specifications, such as blade type and size, printed on the shaft.
-
Ensure Proper Length:
- The stick should reach between the nose and chin when the player is on skates.
- If measuring without skates, have the player stand on their toes for accuracy.
- Avoid sticks that are too short (causing excessive bending) or too long (restricting mobility).
-
Create a Safe and Functional Knob:
- Use tape or inserts to make a knob that fits the player’s hand size and ensures a secure grip.
- The knob should be small enough for control but large enough to prevent it from slipping through a helmet cage.
-
Avoid “Growing Into” Sticks:
- A stick that is too large or stiff for the player’s current ability can hinder development and performance.
-
Custom Adjustments:
- Cut sticks to the correct length if needed, and ensure the knob is tailored to the player’s grip preferences.
