The D Scissor to 2 on 1 from John Dean is a 3 part drill that allows players to practice support options in the offensive zone and finishes with a full ice 2 on 1.

Setup

  • Forwards and defense are lined up along the boards in between the point and half wall.
  • This a full ice drill that is going out of opposite corners.
  • Part 1: On the whistle, the coach chips a puck into the corner.
    • 2 defenseman jump out to the point and 2 forwards go in to retrieve the puck.
    • The first forward picks up the puck while the second forward is a support option at the face-off dot.
    • The puck is passed to the forward at the face-off dot, and they pass to the strong side point player, who passes to their partner.
    • Both forwards crash the net for a high tip option and a net front tip option.
  • Part 2: Coach chips another puck into the corner.
    • One of the forwards that was in front of the net retrieves the puck and passes the puck behind the net to their teammate who went below the goal line for support.
    • The player with the puck wheels up along the boards towards the half wall and looks to pass to the defenseman who is in the center of the blue line.
    • The strong side defender scissors and switches with their partner to provide them another outlet to pass to.
    • The defender at the point can shoot or pass to one of their teammates for a quick shot on net.
  • Part 3: Coach leaves a puck at the base of the face-off circle.
    • The two forwards swing to pick up the puck to begin a 2 on 1 against the low defender that scissored / switched with their partner.
    • Important that all players that are in the 2 on 1 stay on their side of the ice since another 2 on 1 will be coming down the ice from the opposite corner.

Coaching Points

  • Communicate loudly to let your teammates know you are open for a pass.
  • All players should work hard to get into support positions as quickly as possible.
  • Keep sticks on the ice to let your teammate know where you would like the puck to be passed to.
