Cut Backs and Fakes

This video focuses on using cutbacks and fakes to evade defenders, giving players more time and space on the ice.

Coaching Points:

  1. Three Layers of Deception:

    • When performing a cutback or fake, think about using three key parts of your body:
      • Head: Move your head in the direction you want to fake, making the defender think you are going that way.
      • Stick and Puck: Angle your stick and move the puck as if you are going in the direction you are faking.
      • Feet: Position your feet to sell the fake. If your feet are pointing in a certain direction, the defender is more likely to believe you are going that way.
  2. Types of Cutbacks:

    • Ten-and-Two/Crosby Turn: Open up your hips and turn your skates outward to change direction quickly. This helps you stay balanced and keep your speed.
    • One-Legged Punch Stop: Use one foot (usually the one closest to the boards or outside) to quickly stop and change direction. This is useful when a defender is closing in on you from behind.
    • Two-Foot Punch Stop: Plant both feet lightly and use the momentum to quickly push off and move in the opposite direction. This adds more control during a cutback.
  3. Executing Cutbacks:

    • Use a quick stop and change direction when you notice a defender pressuring you from behind or closing in.
    • Sell the move by using your head, stick, and feet to make it look like you are going one way before cutting back the other way.
    • Add speed to your moves once you are comfortable with the technique, making it harder for defenders to read and react.
  4. Using Cutbacks in Different Areas:

    • Offensive Zone: Use cutbacks along the boards or behind the net to shake off defenders and create more space for a shot or pass.
    • Defensive Zone: When retrieving the puck and under pressure, use a quick cutback to elude the forechecker and create space to make a pass or skate the puck out.
  5. Practice Tips:

    • Start by practicing these moves slowly, focusing on using your head, stick, and feet to sell the fake.
    • Progress to adding more speed and incorporating the cutbacks into drills that simulate game situations.
    • Encourage players to keep their head up and be aware of their surroundings while performing these moves.

By teaching players to be more evasive using these cutback techniques, they will be better able to create space, maintain control of the puck, and become more difficult to defend against.
