There is a nice series of skating drills you can do with the younger kids in the neutral zone in which the setup only involves 4 tires. This drill works on control turn in each direction. At each tire the player will do a tight control turn alternating direction each time. In this diagram players do a turn to their left at the first tire and then to their right on the second tire.
