Boomer Shooting Game

Get Full Access

The Boomer Shooting Game from Jason Lammers is a competitive small area game that is 2 on 2 but each team has support players that can be used as shooting options. Coaches can create different support, passing and shooting variations with this setup. Quick passes and quick shots will help teams be successful in this game.

Setup

  • 2 on 2 in zone with one net.
  • Each team has 2 support players. The players are setup on opposite sides of the ice with one high and one low.
  • On the whistle, the game is played 2 on 2 in the playing area.
  • Offense is trying to score and can use their support players at any point.
  • Defense is working on getting the puck and they can transition to offense by passing to one of their support players.
  • Support player variations:
    • Can allow them to pass or shoot
    • Can require them to only pass or only shoot
    • Can require them to pass to the other support player who must one time the shot

Coaching Points

  • Defensive team should keep sticks on the ice at all times to block passing lanes.
  • Offensive team should be aware of where their teammates and support players are to make quick passes and quick shots.
  • Support players should be calling for the puck when they are open and be ready to make a play.

Variations

  • Can require the support players to perform a variety of skills (see support player variations in the setup details above).
  • Can allow teams to transition by passing to support players or having to pass to a coach (or player) at the top of the blue line.
  • Can have the playing area as shown in the diagram or allow the whole zone to be the playing area.
