Day 4 - Receiving a Lateral Pass

This video focuses on receiving vertical passes (low-to-high passes) effectively and transitioning quickly into a hard, accurate shot.

Coaching Points:

  • Body Position for Vertical Passes:

    • Keep your hands out in front of your body with the top hand up to create a stable position for receiving the puck.
    • Ensure the blade is cupped when the puck arrives to help control and cradle the puck smoothly.
  • Three Shooting Variations:

    • Standard Shot: Catch the pass, cradle it, and then release the shot with a focus on pushing through with the bottom hand for power.
    • Stickhandling Shot: Add a quick push or pull move before shooting to simulate game situations, ensuring the shot is loaded with power.
    • One-Timer: Catch the puck and immediately release it without additional handling, emphasizing quick transitions and strong follow-through.
  • Focus Areas:

    • Maintain proper hand positioning and body alignment when receiving the puck to keep the shot preparation efficient.
    • Cradle bouncing pucks by cutting the blade over the puck to settle it for a cleaner, harder shot.
    • Drive the shot with your lower body by transferring weight and pushing forcefully on the bottom hand.
  • Progression and Repetition:

    • Start with slow passes to work on consistent reception and transition into shooting.
    • Gradually increase the speed of passes and work on releasing the puck faster to simulate game scenarios.
    • Experiment with catching passes at various angles to improve adaptability and readiness in dynamic situations.

Practising these techniques will improve the ability to turn vertical pass receptions into powerful, accurate shots, enhancing overall scoring effectiveness.
