The 3 v 0 Breakout to 2 v 1 is a high tempo drill that allows teams to practice breakout concepts, and 2 on 1's.
Setup
- This is a full ice drill. Defense lined up in opposite corners, and forwards split up into 4 lines around the neutral zone (as shown on the diagram).
- On the whistle, all 3 players from both sides start.
- 3 v 0 Breakout part of the drill:
- The defender skates up to the top of the circle, pivots, retrieves the puck and works to get the puck around the net for the breakout.
- The center starts to break out low and slow getting ready for a pass from the winger.
- The winger gets the puck off of the boards and passes to the winger.
- 2 v 1 part of the drill:
- After the center gets the puck from the winger, the center skates up ice with the puck to begin a 2 v 1 on the other side of the ice.
- After the winger passes to the center, they skate to the near blue line and curl back to join the center from the other end of the ice to attack 2 v 1 against the defender that originally broke the puck out.
- 3 v 0 Breakout part of the drill:
Coaching Points
- Breakout:
- Center should get low and be slow with stick on the ice in a good support position for the winger.
- Winger should get to the half wall and shoulder check before making the pass to the center.
- The defender should skate the puck around the net with their head up.
- 2 v 1:
- The defender should work on good gap control.
- The winger should work hard to time the zone entry and support the center coming up ice.
Variations
- Can have the defender play a 2 v 1 (like is shown in the video), or you can have them try to angle and stop the zone entry at the blue line.
