Objective
To create a competitive environment where players focus on breaking out effectively under pressure, protecting the puck, and transitioning quickly between offense and defense. This drill challenges players to make smart decisions, use support options, and communicate throughout the game.
Set Up
Set up a 3-on-3 game in the offensive zone with one team starting on offense and the other on defense. The defensive team must “carry out” the puck or make a clean pass to their teammates waiting at the blue line to transition to offense. In this example, 3 players line up on the blue line. The players behind them are on the opposite team.
- The coach starts play by dumping a puck into the zone.
- The offensive team works to maintain possession and create scoring opportunities.
- The defensive team focuses on breaking out by either:
- Carrying the puck out of the zone, or
- Passing to the next players in line (their teammates waiting at the blue line).
- Once the breakout is complete, the team that was on offense is now defending as the next 3 players attack.
- The game is continuous with quick transitions, encouraging players to protect the puck, make smart breakout plays, and defend actively.
Coaching Points
- Breakouts: Focus on clean exits with control—carry the puck out or make smart outlet passes.
- Puck Protection: Use body positioning and support from teammates to protect the puck under pressure.
- Defense: Stay tight to opponents, angle them to the outside, and pressure the puck carrier to force turnovers.
Variations
- Adjust the playing area to 1/2 ice, 1/3 ice, or smaller zones.
- Modify the drill for 2v2, 4v4, or 5v5 formats.
- Add a rule requiring the breakout team to complete a pass before leaving the zone.
This drill encourages strong communication, quick transitions, and smart decision-making under competitive pressure, preparing players for game-like breakout scenarios.
