The Full Ice 2 V 0 to 2 V 2 Backcheck is a full ice drill that helps players practice rush attack at full speed, with pressure from backcheckers.
Setup
- Set up players in all 4 corners of the ice.
- On the whistle, 2 players go down the ice 2 on 0.
- After they take a shot (or a coach blows a whistle), 2 players skate down the ice 2 on 0, and the 2 players that just finished their shot, quickly transition into a full ice backcheck.
- The backcheckers work to break up the 2 on 0.
- The drill is continuous.
Coaching Points
- Offensive players:
- Underhandle the puck and use full strides to try to gain distance from the backcheckers.
- Keep your head up to see if your teammate is open or covered by the backchceker.
- Increase your scoring chances by shooting in stride, or passing to your teammate for a quick release shot.
- Backchecking players:
- Use full strides to try and catch the offensive players.
- Skate towards the middle of the ice with your stick on the ice to prevent passes.
- Communicate with your teammate.
Variations
- Can set this up to be in between the blue lines to make this a shorter, quicker transition. View 2 V 0 Continuous Backcheck.
- Attackers can start further back by the goal line or up by the hash marks depending on the type of challenge you would like to present to them.
- Coaches can have the backcheckers start on the whistle or after a shot is taken.
