2 on 1 Continuous Dump Drill

Get Full Access

The 2 on 1 Continuous Dump Drill from Tyler Bielby works on offensive dumps and helps defenders practice retrievals & breaking out efficiently.

Setup

  • This is a full ice drill. Line up forwards just inside the blueline and the defenders just outside of the the blueline (as shown in the diagram).
  • On the whistle, D2 (who starts out behind the net) skates the puck out and passes to F1, who is swinging. At the same time, F2 swings up ice and F1 & F2 begin a 2 on 1 against D1.
  • The forwards dump the puck into the opposite corner and D1 races to retrieve the puck, and break out to the next two forwards in line.
  • The drill is continuous and allows forwards to work on dumps, and defenders to work on puck retrievals and breakouts.

Coaching Points

  • Forwards should work on dumping the puck in the opposite corner away from the goalie. Getting the puck to stay right against the boards instead of bouncing far out so its an easy retrieval is an extra bonus.
  • Defenders should work on keeping a proper gap during the 2 on 1, shoulder checking before their retrievals, work on deception before collecting the puck, and then getting their head up quickly to find the open forward to break out to.

Variations

  • Coaches can do 2v1 or 2v2. 2v2 allows for teams to work on other breakout plays between their defenseman (such as reverses, d to d passes, bumps, etc).
  • Coaches can have one of the forwards that dumped the puck into the zone do a soft forecheck so that it requires the defenders to keep their head up and find the best option to break out.
  • The main point of the drill is to practice dumps and breakouts but coaches can occasionally blow a "double whistle" which means the 2 v 1 is live and that the forwards are trying to score while the defense tries to stop and break the puck out.
